Shutdown 2.3
Same shit, different week
DHS runs out of funding this Friday
This shutdown will drag on for at least another week in my (not absolute) opinion. More on where we are below and offices to call after that. Also, if you’re looking for inspiration to push back against detention center expansion in your community, look here or here or here.
NOTE: TSA rejected the assertion that PreCheck and Global Entry would close about an hour after I recorded this.
Offices to call:
(in order of priority - don’t forget to try field offices if the DC office doesn’t pick up)
YOUR HOUSE REP - find yours AND BOTH OF YOUR SENATORS - find yours:
List your demands for the DHS bill (here are the ones Dems are asking for already).
I also like:
Rescind all or part of the OBBBA funding to ICE.
Zero out or dramatically reduce CBP and ICE operational budget.
Strip any jurisdiction over citizens from ICE/CBP
Freeze all detention expansion (no more capital/building purchases) or any new detention contracts (IGSA, DIGSA, FRC, CDF)
NO minors in immigration detention
Unlimited access to legal counsel per the Sixth Amendment
Free phone use for all detainees
Compulsive oversight for state and local officials
Enumerated paths for Bivens actions against federal agents for constitutional violations
Also raise your objections to the SAVE act and your concerns about the ACA negotiations.
DHS Appropriations Leadership (the ones in charge of re-negotiating the DHS bill)
Senate
Katie Britt (AL) & Chris Murphy (CT): Chair & Ranking Member of Senate Homeland Security’s Appropriations Subcommittee)
Susan Collins (ME) & Patty Murray (WA): Ranking Member of Senate Appropriations At-Large)
House
Mark Amodei (NV) & Henry Cuellar (TX): Chair & Ranking Member of House Homeland Security’s Appropriations Subcommittee)
Tom Cole (OK) & Rosa Delauro (CT): Chair & Ranking Member of House Appropriations At-Large)

Resharing my thoughts on “Abolish ICE”:
Let me reemphasize that I SUPPORT abolishing ICE, I just want to make sure we also speak intelligently about the plan after (putting immigration back under the Department of Labor, etc.).
